Research Projects

Microbial control of ambrosia beetles and their fungal symbionts. 


  1. Identify and assess genetic diversity of Ambrosiella spp. associated with ambrosia beetles Xylosandrus crassiusculus and X. germanus in the eastern US. Fungal symbionts will be identified using lsu and ssu ribosomal DNA sequences, and intraspecific diversity determined using ITS sequences and microsatilite markers.
  2. Determine susceptibility of ambrosia fungi to fungal antagonists and to entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium brunneum.
  3. Determine impact of entomopathogenic fungi on survival of treated foundresses and brood development in galleries.
