Place: Building 200, Conference Room 220, BARC-East
Topic/Title: “Application of primordial germ cell in poultry”
Dr. Jae Yong Han, Director of The Institute of Animal Science and
Technology and Director WCU Program in Biomodulation, both at the
Seoul National University, Korea
Dr. Han developed the embryonic germ (EG) cell lines from PGCs in chickens for the development of germline-competent stem cells and established an efficient system for the production of transgenic birds. He has improved the avian transgenic methodology by reporting “PiggyBac Transposition into Primordial Germ Cells is an Efficient Tool for Transgenesis in Chickens” and now, he is extending his knowledge to preserve endangered wild birds. As a part of the grand project, he was the first to successfully produce interspecies germline chimeras; germline chimeric chickens received transplanted PGCs from Korean ring-neck pheasant embryos produced pheasant progeny. He considers this strategy could be the foundation for the cloning and conservation of endangered wild birds approaching extinction.
