February 2012

Larry Adams and Chris Johnson attend the National Sweetpotato Collaborators meeting in Birmingham, AL on February 4-5, 2012.   Larry, Chris and Randy Luttrell attended a production meeting of the Mississippi Sweetpotato Growers Association in Pittsboro, Mississippi on February 9, 2012.   The following papers were presented.   Adams, L., R. Luttrell, and T. Smith. Evaluation of various insecticide regimes in sweetpotato production for sugarcane beetle control in the Mid South; Adams, L., and R. Luttrell. 2011 product evaluation and varietal differences for reniform nematode suppression in Mississippi Delta sweetpotato production; and Adams, L., and C. Johnson. 2011 USDA, ARS, SIMRU sweetpotato variety trial results.

January 2012

The following SY’s attended the Beltwide Cotton Conference held in Orlando, FL on January 3-6, 2012.  OP Perera presented a paper on “Prevalence of the Small RNA Virus Strain LyLV-1 in Natural Populations of Lygus lineolaris in the Mississippi Delta.  Ryan Jackson made a presentation on “Comparative Benefit of Bt and Non-Bt cotton Under Different Insect Management Strategies..  Clint Allen presented a paper entitled “Economic Returns of Bt and Non-Bt cotton under Different Insect Management Strategies”, and Randy Luttrell  presented a paper on “Insecticide Treated and Untreated Bt and conventional Cottons Under High Insect Pressure in Large Field Cages”  and “Insect Control Without Bt.”

November 2011

Clint Allen attended the 37th annual Mississippi Agricultural Economics Association Meeting at Mississippi State University on November 4th.  Discussions focused on the drafting of the 2012 farm bill and possible implications to Mississippi Delta farmers.

Dr. Yueping He, a visiting research with Southern Insect Management Research Unit, USDA-ARS presented a seminar on his insecticide resistance research on tarnished plant bug and other insects.

SIMRU actively supported and participated in the annual meeting of The Mississippi Entomological Association (MEA) at the Bost Extension Building, Mississippi State University, October 24 and 25, 2011.   Clint Allen  served as President of the MEA this year.  Ryan Jackson and Randy Luttrell served as Executive Directors.  Gordon Snodgrass received the Distinguished Service Award from the MEA.   This is the highest recognition bestowed on MEA members.    Unit scientists were authors or coauthors on  five oral presentations.  (1)  W. Randy Luttrell, Maribel Portilla, and Yu Cheng Zhu of the Southern Insect Management Research Unit (SIMRU) attended the Entomological Society of America meeting in Reno, Nevada, November 13-17, 2011.  Randy Luttrell and Yu Cheng Zhu participated in an invited IRAC (International Resistance Advisory Committee) meeting to recommend research priorities for industry-supported resistance management research projects.   Papers presented at the meeting included (a) Maribel Portilla Gordon Snodgrass , and Randy LuttrellImpact of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveriia bassiana on several biological control agents”;  Yu Cheng Zhu, Zibiao Guo, and Randy Luttrell “Insecticide resistance and gene regulation in the tarnished plant bug”; and Fangneng Huang Mukti Ghimire,  B. Rogers Leonard, Yu Cheng Zhu, Yaoyu Bai, Liping Zhang,  David Sindani Wangila,  and Yunlong YangSusceptibility of eight Cry1Ab corn-resistant strains of sugarcane borer to three individual Cry toxins”.

Yolanda Harvey attended a Windows Server 2008: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction on November 14-18, 2011 in Washington, D.C.

September 2011

Randy Luttrell attended a recognition ceremony for Dr. Johnie Jenkins, ARS Research Leader , at Mississippi State on September 8. Dr. Jenkins was recognized for 50 years of service to the Agricultural Research Service.

Randy Luttrell attended the Annual Program Planning Committee meeting of the Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association on September 13, 2011 at the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service Building in Bolivar County. He summarized current research and research plans for the group of consultants.

Randy Luttrell participated in a teleconference meeting of the Midsouth Area Workforce Diversity Committee on September 14, 2011.

Larry Adams, Chris Johnson and Randy Luttrell attended Alcorn State University’s Sweet Potato Jamboree and Fall Vegetable Field Day on September 22, 2011 at the Alcorn State Extension/Research Farm, Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Larry Adams gave an invited presentation to the group on “ARS Contributions to Sweetptoato Insect Research. Dr. Tahir Rashid, an Alcorn State University entomologist and SIMRU collaborator, gave a presentation on “IPM Practices in Organic Farming. Included was a summary of cooperative work with the Southern Insect Management Research Unit.

Clint Allen, Ryan Jackson, Randy Luttrell, Maribel Portilla and Gordon Snodgrass participated in the annual Midsouth Entomologists review of current year research in Casscoe, Arkansas on September 27 and 28, 2011.

Ryan Jackson was invited to attend the West Texas Agricultural Chemicals Institute’s 59th Annual Conference on September 13-14 and presented information on Bt susceptibility in bollworm.

August 2011

Corey Douglas, Dana May, and Shelby Reister, STEP employees with Clint Allen; D’anice Dishmon and Jordan Tullos, STEP employees with Gordon Snodgrass and Gerald Gipson; Julian Beamon, Christopher Morris, and Bailey Tubertini, STEP employees with Larry Adams and Chris Johnson; Gwendolyn Lee, Flenadia Moore, and Breanna Pennington, STEP employees with Maribel Portilla; Julian Henry, Nicholas Holmes, Emily Mosow, and Dustin Picklemann, STEP employees with Ryan Jackson; Parker Brocato, Cavishia Roberson, Chastity Scott, and Jasmine Warren, STEP employees with Kenya Dixon, Chad Roberts and Randy Luttrell; and Antia Cain and Tashanika Knight, STEP students with Yu Cheng Zhu and Sandy West gave oral presentations of their work experiences in the Southern Insect Management Research Unit during 2011 on August 4, 2011 in the conference room of the National Biological Control Laboratory. Jesse King, a STEP employee working with Randy Luttrell and Kenya Dixon; Michael McCain, a STEP employee working with O.P. Perera; and David Liang, a STEP employee working with Clint Allen gave oral presentations of their 2011 work experiences in the Southern Insect Management Research Unit conference room on August 11, 2011.  Video recordings of the presentations and written reports are posted on the Unit’s website.

Clint Allen, Ryan Jackson and Randy Luttrell participated in an Executive Committee meeting of the Mississippi Entomological Association via a CIV link to Mississippi State University on August 17, 2011.  Dr. Allen is the current President of the Mississippi Entomological Association.

Randy Luttrell participated in a BioEnergy Meeting with ARS scientists from New Orleans, industry representatives from Bio Dimensions in Memphis, Strategic Biomass Solutions with Mississippi Technology Alliance, Mississippi State University scientists and representatives of MSA ARS laboratories and Delta Council on August 30, 2011.

Ryan Jackson, Clint Allen and Randy Luttrell prepared a presentation “Value of Transgenes in Early and Full Season Cottons for Bollworm/Tobacco Budworm Control under Different Insecticide Spray Systems" and gave the presentation to three tour group on the U.S. Cotton Breeders Tour at Stoneville, Mississippi, August 30, 2011.

July 2011

Randy Luttrell attended the Delta Council Cotton Ginning and Cotton Quality Improvement Committee Meeting at Stoneville, Mississippi on July 21, 2011.

Thomas Sherman, a STEP employee working with Larry Adams and Chris Johnson,  and Jana and Latoyia Slay, STEP employees working with Ryan Jackson, gave oral overviews of their summer work experiences in the SIMRU Conference Room on July 29, 2011.   Copies of their written reports and video recordings of their presentations are available on the SIMRU website.

June 2011

Les Price and Randy Luttrell of the Southern Insect Management Research Unit, along with Gretchen Sassenrath of the Crop Production Research Unit and Brian Scheffler of the Genomics Research Unit, met with K-12 science teachers in the Greenville Public School System on June 21, 2011 to discuss cooperative programming with the JWDSRC.   The activity and discussions were organized by Carlean Horton and a year-long interaction on a number of science education activities is anticipated.

May 2011

Randy Luttrelland Maribel Portilla of the Southern Insect Management Research Unit and Brian Scheffler of the Genomics Research Unit attended the 76th Annual Meeting of Delta Council at Delta State University, May 6, 2011.

 

Larry Adams attended a Farm Financial Management Workshop organized by Alcorn State University on Monday, May 23 in Moorhead, Mississippi. He made a presentation on ARS contributions to sweetpotato production.

 

Randy Luttrell participated in the final oral examination of Chase Bell, a M.S. student in Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Arkansas on Monday, May 23.

 

April 2011


Ryan Jackson, Clint Allen and Randy Luttrell participated in a southern region teleconference to discuss remediation plans for dealing with putative Bt resistance events in cotton.   The meeting was organized by Don Parker of the National Cotton Council and included most of the public sector entomologists in the southern United States.

Bill Burdine, Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service; Ross Burney, a sweetpotato farmer from Coffeeville, Mississippi; Benny Graves, Mississippi Sweet Potato Council; Phillip McKibben, an agricultural consultant in Northeast and Central Mississippi; and Dr. Tara Smith, LSU Ag Center Sweet Potato Extension Specialist visited SIMRU on April 13 and discussed sweetpotato insect research with Larry Adams, Ryan Jackson and Randy Luttrell.

Larry Adams attended Career Day at O’Bannon Elementary School in Greenville, MS, on April 29, 2011.  During this event he conducted three, twenty-five minute classroom “seminars”.  He talked to the students about what it is like to be an Entomologist for USDA-ARS, Southern Insect Management Research Unit.  He demonstrated to the students the daily importance of math, science, reading and writing to the work he does for USDA-ARS, SIMRU.

March 2011


Clint Allen, Maribel Portilla and Yu Cheng Zhu attended the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 19-22, 2011.  Clint presented a paper on “A survey of loopers in Mississippi soybean fields during 2010”.  Clint was also a coauthor on a presentation by J. W. McPherson, F. Musser, A. Catchot, D. Cook, and C. Allen “The residual efficacy of selected insecticides against stink bug.” Maribel present two posters.  One on “Method for determining the effect of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana and the insect growth regulator Diamond on fecundity and growth inhibition of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris” was coauthored by Gordon Snodgrass and Randy Luttrell.   The second on “Pathogen city and demographic parameters of isofamilies of Spodoptera frugiperda resistant to Cry1Ac and Cry1Fa proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis” was coauthored by C. Blanco, G. Snodgrass, R. Arias, J. L. Jurat-Fuentes and R. Luttrell.  Gordon Snodgrass was also a coauthor on a presentation by A. Catchot, F. Musser, J. Gore, D. Cook, L. Owen, B. Adams and G. Snodgrass “Management of tarnished plant bug in the Mississippi Delta”.  Yu Cheng’s paper was entitled “Identification and characterization of major pesticide resistance genes in the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris”.  Coauthors were Z. Guo and R. Luttrell.   Yu Cheng also was coauthor on a poster by F. Huan, M. N. Ghmire, B. R. Leonard, Y. C. Zhu, R. Levy and G. P. Head entitled “Susceptibility of field populations of sugarcane borer to Bt toxins and Bt corn containing single and pyramided transgenes”.

Rosie Ford and Randy Luttrell participated in MSA Supervisor Training on March 29-30, 2011 at the Capps Center, Stoneville, Mississippi.

Clint Allen attend the United Soybean Board Strategic Meeting in Atlanta, GA, March 30-31, 2011. The goal of meeting was to discuss strategies to reduce the impact of stink bugs on soybeans.

Gore and Scott Stewart authored an invited paper in a special symposium “What’s going on with dual gene Bt cotton? Why are we spraying more for caterpillar control?    The paper was titled “Increased survival of bollworms on Bollgard II cotton compared to lab based colony”.    Ryan Jackson was a co-organizer of this symposium.   Wes McPherson, A. L. Catchot, Fred Musser, D. R. Cook and K. C. Allen presented a paper on “Residual activity of selected insecticides on green stink bugs”.    Yu Cheng Zhu, Zibiao Guo and Randy Luttrell presented a paper on “Synergistic interaction of bio-activie reagents with Bt against cotton worms”.   Fred Musser, R. E. Jackson, G. M. Lorenz, Scott Aiken, Ames Herbert, Jeremy Greene, Phillip Roberts,  B. R. Leonard, K. v. Tindall, Scott Stewart and John Adamczyk presented a paper on :2010 pyrethroid resistance monitoring on bollworms”.   R. G. Luttrell, K. C. Allen, P. O’Leary and T. G. Teague presented a paper “Insect infestations, crop development and evolving management approaches on a Northeast Arkansas cotton farm. 

Randy Luttrell participated in Narinderpal Singh’s PhD oral examination and dissertation defense at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas on January 19.

Chris Johnson and Randy Luttrell of SIMRU and Satya Narina of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit attended the Sweet Potato Collaborators meeting at the National Sweet Potato Conferences in Orange Beach, Alabama on January 22 and 23.   Chris Johnson also attended the National Sweet Potato Convention that followed.     Larry Adams prepared two posters (Insecticide Application Method and Chemistry Evaluation for Sweetpotato Production in the Mississippi Delta and 2010 Product Evaluation for Reniform Nematode Suppression in Mississippi Delta Sweetpotato Production) describing SIMRU recent work.

Ryan Jackson made an invited presentation to the Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association meeting at the Bost Extension Center, Mississippi State University on January 27, 2011.   The title of the presentation was “Bt Cotton Resistance Monitoring Update”.

Perera and Yu Cheng Zhu attended the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.   Clint Allen presented a paper on “Plusiinae species composition in Mississippi soybeans”.   Renee Arias, Carlos Blanco, Maribel Portilla, Gordon Snodgrass and Brian Scheffler presented a paper on :First microsatellietes developed from Spodoptera frugiperda and their potential use for population genetics”.   Ryan Jacskon made an invited presentation to a P-IE Section Symposium: Transcending Geography with Regional Cotton IPM Projects entitled “Regional host utilization of Heliothines and implications for resistance management”.  Randy Luttrell, Clint Allen and Tina Gray Teague presented a paper entitled “Understanding cotton insect management through organized study of on-farm databases”.   O.P. Ryan Jackson gave a presentation at the Row Crop Short Course sponsored by Mississippi State University Extension Service in Starkville, MS.

Maribel Portilla met with Jones Walker to discus consecutive rearing insect regulations at NBCL building B.

Maribel Portilla give a 30 minutes talked to Hispanic students from the Leland Scholl District about Agricultural research in the Delta. December 2 at NBCL laboratory.

November 2010

Randy Luttrell participated in RPES training in Beltsville on November 3, 2010.

Randy Luttrell traveled with Tahir Rashid to Alcorn State University on November 8, 2010 to discuss collaborative research on sweetpotato insects with university administrators responsible for Alcorn’s Agricultural Experiment Station.

Clint Allen, Ryan Jackson, Randy Luttrell and Gordon Snodgrass attended Cotton Incorporated’s 2010 Crop Management Seminar and Workshop in Memphis, Tennessee on November 10, 2010.   Gordon Snodgrass made an invited presentation on Status of Insect Resistance: Tarnished Plant Bug.   Ryan Jackson also gave an invited presentation on Status of Insect Resistance: Bt Cotton.

Ryan Jackson and Randy Luttrell attended the national Cotton/Corn Pest Management Meeting in Savannah, Georgia, October 11-14, 2010.   Ryan led a discussion on Bt resistance and resistance management.

Randy Luttrell attended Research Leader Orientation in Beltsville, Maryland, October 19-21.

Larry Adams, Clint Allen, Zibiao Guo, Ryan Jackson, Randy Luttrell, Gordon Snodgrass, and Yu Cheng Zhu participated in a Round Table Discussion of Resistance in Insects and Weeds at the Annual Conference of the Mississippi Entomological Association and the Mississippi Weed Science Society on October 25, 2010 at the Bost Extension Center, Mississippi State University.

Clint Allen, Ryan Jackson, Randy Luttrell, and Gordon Snodgrass participated in a meeting to revise insect control recommendations for Mississippi on October 25, 2010.

Clint Allen is the incoming President of the Mississippi Entomological Association.  Randy Luttrell is one of the directors.

Yu Cheng Zhu was consulted by Michael Ferro, a Ph.D. Candidate at LSU, for a special project on gene mutation and resistance on 10/13/2010. Yu Cheng Zhu provided advice and a few slides to Michael Ferro.

A power point show “by Maribel Portilla was presented at the annual Hispanic Celebration, Stoneville, MS on October 7.

Maribel Portilla met with Jones Walker to discus some ideas to include stink bugs and fire ants in the project impact of field and laboratory application of B. bassiana.

Maribel Portilla attended the Annual Meeting of the Mississippi Entomological Association on October 26, 2010 at the Bost Extension Center, Mississippi State University. A poster by Maribel Portilla, Gordon Snodgrass and Randy Luttrell, Mass Rearing Lygus lineolaris Using Two Artificial Diets were presented.

Maribel Portilla was invited to participate in the NBCL staff meeting, Oct 29 at NBCL conference room.

September 2010

Randy Luttrell of SIMRU and Walker Jones of NBCL visited Mississippi State University on September 8, 2010 and discussed opportunities for collaborative research with entomologists from the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.

Yu Cheng Zhu and Randy Luttrell attended a meeting of the NBCL scientists interested in coccinelids.   Yu Cheng presented an overview of his work to incorporate insecticide resistance genes into lady beetles.

During the last week of September 2010, Clint Allen, Ryan Jackson, Randy Luttrell, and Gordon Snodgrass from SIMRU and Walker Jones from NBCL attended the Midsouth Entomology Working Group meeting in Casscoe, Arkansas.

Randy Luttrell participated in a Leadership Workshop and New Research Leader Training in Beltsville, Maryland on September 14-16.
