Important Events for the Upcoming Week

 

Drs. Matt Römkens and Seth Dabney of the National Sedimentation Laboratory, Oxford, MS, along with Dr. Craig Hickey, National Center for Physical Acoustics and Dr. Mustafa Altinakar, National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, traveled to Jackson, MS to meet with Mr. Kurt Readus, NRCS State Conservationist and his staff.  The purpose of this meeting is to discuss current and future collaborative research between ARS/NSL, NRCS, NCPA and NCCHE. The meeting was held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at the NRCS office in Jackson.

Outreach and Professional Activities:

ARS researcher, Allen Torbert, National Soil Dynamics Laboratory, Auburn, AL is invited to present “Gypsum in Land Application and Phosphorus Remediation” at the Southeastern Sustainable Soils Forum held in Raleigh NC on September 18, 2014.  This meeting is sponsored by the Industrial Resources Council, the North Carolina Soil Science Society, the North Carolina Farm Bureau, and the North Carolina Green Industries Council.

ARS researchers Eddy Langendoen, Seth Dabney, and Ronald Bingner of the Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit, Oxford, MS have been invited by the Local Organizing Committee of the 11th International Conference on Hydroscience and Engineering, Hamburg, Germany to present their research.  Dr. Langendoen will also meet with collaborators at Delft University, Delft, Netherlands regarding future research.

 

Several employees of the Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Unit, Baton Rouge, LA will be traveling to Jonesboro, AR on a site visit for data collection and honey weights for research experiment on September 22-26, 2014, to a Non USDA facility.

ARS researcher Tom Rinderer, Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Unit, Baton Rouge, LA will speak at the Worcester County Beekeepers Association Meeting in Worcester, MA October 3-5, 2014, on Russian Honeybee research and current research at the Honey Bee Lab.

ARS scientist Agnes Rimando, Natural Products Utilization Research Unit, Oxford, MS will travel to Mississippi State, MS to conduct a seminar on the health-promoting properties of the blueberry phenolic compound pterostilbene on October 3, 2014.  This event is sponsored by Mississippi State University, Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion and will be open to all faculty, staff, and students.  

ARS researcher Geromy Moore, Food and Feed Safety Research Unit, New Orleans, LA will attend the FEDQ Training Conference 2014, September 22-26, 2014, in Baltimore, MD. The training will cover: 1) Foster an environment in the federal government where employees have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in a safe and inclusive environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, particularly with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity; 2) Ensure federal personnel, and the public served by the federal government, are provided with equal access to services and benefits without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity; 3) Provide education and training related to the purposes of this Non-Profit Corporation; and 4) Partner with other LGBT Organizations and other Federal Sector Affinity Groups to share and disseminate information, best practices, and training materials, all with the goal of achieving a more full and inclusive workforce for all.
