Dr. Ann C. Kennedy is a Soil Scientist/Soil Microbiologist with the USDA-ARS Northwest Sustainable Agroecosystems Research Unit in Pullman, WA. She also serves as an adjunct scientist in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University. Dr. Kennedy earned her B.A. degree at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, her M.S. degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia and her Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University. Dr. Kennedy is a Fellow in the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy and has been a soil scientist for more than 25 years.

She works in the area of in soil microbiology and soil microbial ecology. Her research includes soil microbial community dynamics in residue management, biological weed control, rhizosphere ecology and soil quality. Dr. Kennedy's program focuses on plant-microbe interactions and soil quality in dryland cropping systems. She conducts research to characterize microbial community indicators of soil quality and plant health and to identify soil biomarkers for fingerprinting eroded soils. She is also involved in research on weed seed decay and the identification of weed-suppressive soil microbial communities.

Dr. Kennedy served as the Research Leader of the USDA-ARS Land Management and Water Conservation Research Unit from 1996 to 2001. She served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Arid Soil Research and Rehabilitation and Associate Technical Editor for the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation. She routinely works with K-12 teachers to bring science experiments into the classroom as a means to encourage young students' interest in science.
