Inception Workshop for Improved Vaccines for the Control of East Coast Fever (ECF) in Cattle in Africa, held January 27-29, 2014 in Nairobi Kenya

Dr. Eileen Thacker of the Office of National Research Programs, and Eileen Herrera of the Office of International Research Programs (OIRP);attended the “Inception Workshop for Improved Vaccines for the Control of East Coast Fever (ECF) in Cattle in Africa” in Nairobi Kenya, January 27-29, 2014. The work is part of ongoing public-private collaboration between multinational experts in ECF, bovine immunology, parasitology, vaccine development, and genomics, with input from the private sector. The workshop marks the organization of a consortium, which in addition to the research and project management teams and the private sector groups- will include an external advisory board. The goal is to design subunit vaccines to control ECF, which kills an animal every 30 seconds in sub-Saharan Africa. This is devastating to smallholder farmers in particular, and limits their progress on food and economic security. The project is funded by USAID Feed the Future in cooperation with ARS, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Norman Borlaug Commemorative Research Initiative, and the CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish.
