Careers with USDA-ARS


As the principal in-house scientific research agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has career opportunities for permanent and temporary employees. Being a scientific research agency, many of the careers available are in the life, physical, and engineering sciences. ARS employs research scientists, postdoctoral research associates, support scientists and research technicians, as well as positions in various professional, technical, administrative, secretarial and clerical, and trades and crafts occupational areas.

Your work will matter - to everyday people from babies to seniors; to farmers and ranchers; to all kinds of businesses large and small; and to a future world with many more people to feed, less land suitable for growing crops and sustaining livestock, and an environment under increasing pressure from myriad sources.

Tours and Field Days


The USDA-ARS Hydraulic Engineering Research Unit staff hosts facility tours and/or field days annually. Tours are geared to educate our stakeholders and the public about our research and the impact it makes on engineering practice in support of agriculture and the environment across Oklahoma, the United States, and the world. Outreach


The USDA-ARS Hydraulic Engineering Research Unit staff provides outreach to the community through participation in local career fairs, providing hands-on educational opportunities, and hosting technology transfer workshops. Scientists and staff provide technical guidance to faculty and engineering students from nearby universities through laboratory demonstrations, career opportunities, and interactions on senior capstone design, NSF-Research for Undergraduate, research scholar, and graduate student projects. Students are exposed to facilities management, physical model construction, research from data collection to analysis, and technology transfer through publications and technical presentations. In addition, scientists and collaborators host workshops on various research topics to other federal partners and stakeholders (i.e. USDA-NRCS, U. S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Association of State Dam Safety Offices, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, state dam safety offices, among others). Research is not only conducted by USDA-ARS scientists but also through the scientific collaboration of others. USDA-ARS Hydraulic Engineering Research Unit scientists have collaborated with scientists and engineers from Oklahoma State University, Colorado State University, Baylor University, Virginia Tech University, University of Mississippi, USDA-NRCS, USBR, USACE, Electricite DeFrance, Canadian Electrical Association Technical Interest Dam Safety Interest Group, and HR Wallingford-UK among others.
