The National Animal Disease Center's (NADC), Ames, Iowa, current business focuses around four strategic research themes that include ruminant diseases and immunology, emerging diseases (most notable viral and prion diseases); zoonotic diseases in wildlife and livestock species; and microbial ecology in food safety and animal health.  NADC researchers across all four of these strategic themes are pioneering early development and integration of high-throughput genomics and systems biology platforms to yield new and exciting breakthroughs in potential molecular-based detection diagnostic technologies.

The mission of the Foreign Animal Disease Research Unit (FADRU) at Plum Island, NewYork, is to carry out the research needed to understand the pathogenesis and the host response to foreign animal disease agents such as foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, and African swine fever; and to translate this knowledge into useful interventions such as new diagnostic tools and vaccines for effective outbreak response, control, and eradication.

The Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory (SEPRL) brings together scientific expertise in an integrated research approach that includes virology, molecular biology, pathology, and immunology.  SEPRL is a major international resource to control highly pathogenic Avian Influenza and virulent Newcastle disease, which pose a major threat to the U.S. poultry industry as well as a severe risk to public health.
