These wild relatives provide sources of genetic diversity for important traits such as resistance to pests and disease, better yield, and drought tolerance.

Caption for October 2003 Agricultural Research magazine article, "From Idea to Supermarket: The Process of Berry Breeding." Fresh berries are delicious and nutritious. But a new cultivar takes a long time to produce from the time a scientist identifies a need for a berry with a new trait to the time the new product hits the supermarket.
