Caption for May/June 2012 Agricultural Research magazine article, "Strategies That Work: Alternatives to Antibiotics in Animal Health." Salmonella is estimated to cause more than 1.3 million cases of human foodborne disease each year.

Caption for February 2006 Agricultural Research magazine article, "Forum—Food Safety’s Bright Web Venue: FSRIO." FSRIO’s database documents investigations of Salmonella species (shown at left: S. enterica serovar Enteritidis), Campylobacter, and other foodborne pathogens.

Caption for March 2005 Agricultural Research magazine article, "Detectives Search for Antimicrobial-Resistant Organisms." Cells of Salmonella enteritidis change shape as they grow. This scanning electron micrograph shows a mixture of small cells with filaments and very large cells that lack filaments. Small cells arise only during certain growth stages and efficiently contaminate eggs when the time is right.
