The red flour beetle (about 1/8-inch long), shown here on a cereal flake, is a grain and cereal pest that ARS researchers are trying to understand genetically to develop improved biopesticides. The eyes on this beetle are white or clear and not the typical black color because of a defective pigment gene. Other defective genes are being discovered and exploited as possible biopesticide targets.
