WHNRC Nutrition Studies
The Western Human Nutrition Research Center is one of six USDA-funded human nutrition centers in the country. Located on the University of California, Davis campus, the goal of the Center is to define nutrition interventions that promote good health. WHNRC Fiber Intervention Study

What is the purpose of this study?
We hope to determine if adding inulin, a type of dietary fiber, to a diet that does not have enough fiber would raise the levels of potentially beneficial bacteria in the gut, reduce gut inflammation and gut leakiness caused by a vaccine, and increase immune response to vaccination

Dietary Guidelines for Americans Study

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this research is to see if achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight is the main health promoting recommendation of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) for women at risk for diabetes, heart disease or stroke.

Study of Metabolic Rate in Whole Room Calorimeter
Who is conducting the study?
Nancy L. Keim, PhD and Sridevi Krishnan, PhD from the Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC) and the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis.
What is the purpose of this study?
We are developing “best practice methods” for using our whole room calorimeter to measure resting metabolic rate and the increase in metabolic rate that occurs after a meal. Healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 years are invited to participate. The research study involves resting in a room calorimeter, eating a standard meal, and remaining in the calorimeter for another 6-8 hours.

Cardiometabolic Effects of Sweet Cherry Juice
Who is conducting the study?

Macrophage Study

Pulse Biomarker Study: Metabolomic Signatures of Dietary Pulses
Who is conducting the study?

What is the purpose of this study?
We hope to determine if pulse (beans, peas, and lentils) consumption can be detected using biomarkers in the blood or urine. We hope to identify these biomarkers of pulse consumption.

Fruit and Vegetable Biomarker Study: Dietary Biomarker Development Center (DBDC)
Who is conducting the study?
Carolyn M. Slupsky, Ph.D., UC Davis Professor and DBDC Program Director.
What is the purpose of this study?
We hope to identify biomarkers in the blood and urine that provide information about fruit and vegetable intake. We will be specifically investigating biomarkers for bananas, peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, green beans, and carrots.

WHNRC Yogurt and GI Health Pilot Study
Who is conducting the study?
Danielle Lemay, Ph.D. and Bess Caswell, Ph.D. from the Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC) and Department of Nutrition, at the University of California, Davis.
What is the purpose of this study?
To determine whether yogurt intake has a positive effect on gastrointestinal health in older adults. This data will contribute to growing knowledge on the potential health benefits of consuming fermented foods, particularly yogurt.
