Mission

We develop and continually improve cutting-edge agricultural soil and plant simulation models, plant stress detection systems, and advanced  technologies that integrate soil biogeochemical processes. Our goal is to provide accessible tools and empirical knowledge bases for stakeholders to evaluate and optimize cropping systems for long-term sustainability and resilience in a changing climate. The Laboratory carries out research to:

  • Assess and understand the responses of crops and soils to changes in carbon dioxide, temperature, light, water, and nutrients;
  • Improve nutrient use efficiency, soil health,  and cropping systems resiliency;
  • Develop models, databases, and expert systems to assess and identify the complex interactions of the changing environment on crop growth, and environmental impacts of agriculture;
  • Work with growers, crop consultants, state extension agents and collaborators for on-farm implementation of models and other tools for increased sustainability and to decrease adverse environmental impact by agricultural practices.

 

The Adaptive Cropping Systems Laboratory is located in Beltsville, MD and is part of the Northeast Area.
