CHI HUA HUANG

Research Leader

Chi-hua Huang is a Soil Scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service at the National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory, located on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. He is also an adjunct Professor of Agronomy at Purdue University. Chi-hua received his B.S. degree from National Chung-Hsing University, M.S. from Washington State University and Ph.D. degree from Purdue University.

Research Objectives:

Develop methodologies to quantify soil surface boundary conditions and erosion processes.

Current Research Projects:

  • Develop the 2nd generation laser scanner for measuring soil surface microtopography.
  • Design a multiple-box system and experimental procedures to simulate hydrologic and erosion processes at a hillslope segment .
  • Quantify seepage and drainage effects on sediment delivery and erosion processes and the role of seep water in transporting pollutants.
  • Develop sediment mass balance relationships and revise current erosion process model concepts.

  • Evaluate a capacitance-based soil moisture probe.

Development of a Multiple Box System:

Single-sized plot box or field plots:

Qs = Fn (Rain, Runoff, Slope,

Surface condition, etc..)

Total sediment delivery”

Multiple boxes or field plots of different lengths:

Qs(x) or d(Qs)/dx

Erosion / deposition processes

occurring on the surface”

Drainage Condition:

Erosion by an interrill-type surface scour. Sediment regime is detachment limiting due to high soil strength or low soil erodibility.

Seepage Condition:

Severe rilling occurred. Sediment regime is transport limiting due to low soil strength or high erodibility.
