Research Experience

Dr. Hogsette was hired in a Post-Doctoral position in January, 1980, to fill a vacant field entomologist position and perform research on Higher Diptera in agricultural settings. After competing successfully for a permanent position, he was hired as a Research Entomologist in August, 1980. In October, 1980, he was sent to Panama City, Florida, to manage the stable fly pilot project. In 1986, he returned to Gainesville and since then has concentrated on various aspects of biology, ecology and control of house flies and stable flies in agricultural and urban settings. The incumbent was appointed Lead Scientist in Mosquito and Fly Research Unit in 2009.

Selected Research Accomplishments

Dr. Hogsette has worked in the field of veterinary and medical entomology for 40 years. His specialty has been the biology, ecology and management of nuisance higher Diptera, particularly house flies and stable flies, in agricultural and urban settings. He has conducted numerous cooperative studies with USDA and university scientists, both nationally and internationally, and has worked extensively with industry and with the military. He has been a frequent consultant throughout the world on research projects involving nuisance flies and has been invited on numerous occasions to write review papers and present educational lectures on filth flies. With his 1985 paper on stable fly long-range dispersal, he opened the door to the continuing nation-wide research and debate on this topic. His work with light traps for house flies has changed the way that the pest control industry utilizes traps in restaurants and other buildings. Dr. Hogsette has worked in many aspects of management of nuisance flies, including trapping, development of and management with pesticides and Insect Growth Regulators, sanitation, biological control, attractants and repellents. He is the author or co-author of more than 230 refereed publications, review articles, book chapters and extension articles, with 3 patents and numerous publications in the popular press. Dr. Hogsette has mentored 25 graduate students.

Dr. Hogsette also met with scientists at the Hungarian National Museum and the Bureau of Sanitation and Hygiene. During his visit, he conducted the first large-scale survey of hymenopterous pupal parasitoids of filth flies in Northern and Central Hungary, August 3-23, 1991.
