M.S. Miami University, Oxford Ohio
Ph.D. University of Nebraska, Lincoln
Research Interests:
Microbial ecology of pathogens in manure, and manure-impacted environments.
Major Project Activities:
My current projects focus on the survival of enteric pathogens in manure-amended soil, and feedlot runoff water, and the ecology of antibiotic resistant bacteria in manure-impacted soil and water. Previous projects have focused on the pre-harvest control of E. coli O157:H7 in beef cattle feedlots, including the ecology and microbial community composition of the E. coli habitats in the cattle intestine and the beef feedlot pen surface material. Another project involved examining the role of pest flies in the transmission of E. coli O157:H7, O111:H8 and O26:H11, including the development and validation of serotype-specific culture methods, and molecular serotyping methods. I have also been involved in numerous human E. coli O157:H7 outbreak investigations associated with agricultural fairs.
