In 2010, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack created seven Regional Biomass Research Centers to develop the best feedstocks and sustainable feedstock production systems for specific agro-eco regions where advanced biofuels will likely be produced. In addition, each Regional Biomass Research Center fosters collaborative research within the complete bioenergy supply chain so as to accelerate the creation of commercial supply chains for the production of advanced biofuels.
Although ARS’ four Regional Biomass Research Centers are primarily networks of ARS scientists within each region, the Centers reach out to other scientific and technical resources both inside and outside ARS to achieve these goals.
