Research Project: Utilization of Carrot Wild Relatives for Carrot Pre-Breeding in Bangladesh and Pakistan

Location: Vegetable Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21000-069-008-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
1) Evaluation of carrot wild relatives in warm, dry, or saline field conditions. 2) Intercrossing of climate-resilient traits from wild relatives to adapted, nutritious cultivated germplasm. 3) Field trialing of intercrosses and their derivatives.

Approach:
Collect and distribute carrot seed including wild relatives; grow carrots in abiotic stress conditions including saline, hot, and dry environments; intercross selected carrots; and develop molecular markers to track important genes.
