Research Project: SEDIMENT TRANSPORT BY FLUID WAVE POWER ACTION IN SHALLOW FLOW

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-017-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 28, 2001
End Date: Aug 31, 2006

Objective:
Determine wave patterns in sediment movement for different flow regimes, slope gradient, sediment sizes, mixtures, and bed roughness conditions in shallow overland flow. Perform analytical solution approaches using principles of continuum mechanics for both the fluid and sediment phase.

Approach:
Experimental studies will be conducted in aluminum channels to determine the movement of non-cohesive granular material in flows in relation to flow rates, slope steepness, sediment characteristics. Experiments are designed to yield information on energy fluxes of surface waves by means of the wave parameters length, height, and velocity. Experiment will be complemented with analytical solution approaches using the continuity and momentum equations for both the fluid and sediment wave. The experimental results will be compared with the theoretically derived solution for the sediment transport rate using the fluid wave power.
