Research Project: Synthesizing Forage, Livestock, Climate, and Economic Information into a Decision Support Framework

Location: Forage and Livestock Production Unit

Project Number: 6218-21610-001-07
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2011
End Date: Sep 14, 2016

Objective:
Develop decision support tools and technology transfer information to communicate forage-grazing agroecosystem research findings to agricultural and natural resource planners and managers.

Approach:
The focus of this collaboration will be to: 1) assess and improve remote sensing-based technology to quantify, in situ, selected quality variables of live standing forages, and 2) identify and assemble relevant climate, plant, animal, soils, and land management data for use in APEX simulations of forage-livestock systems. In (1), identical remote sensing systems will be used to collect canopy reflectances of live, standing forages and correlated with laboratory measurements of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber, (NDF), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). In (2), databases will be queried for relevant plant, soil, animal, and land management data and formatted for input into APEX.
