Research Project: MONITORING THE COMPOSITION OF FOODS AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES

Objective:
To study and monitor the effects of analytical characteristics of dietary components on health. The study will investigate the role of food and dietary supplements intake patterns, food preparation methods, and/or food and dietary supplements components in human health, primarily related to chronic disease outcomes such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. May also involve food composition and dietary supplement ingredient sampling and analysis as well as and development of databases. The Cooperator has expertise in human research and dietary patterns associated with chronic disease.

Approach:
Data for nutrients and other components in foods and/or dietary supplements that are needed to support application of U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans by consumers and others will be periodically updated. Food and dietary supplement composition will be monitored through sampling and analysis as well as literature review. The Cooperator will provide expertise in skills needed in food composition, methods, and database development.
