Location: Foreign Animal Disease Research
Project Number: 8064-32000-057-32
Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Mar 05, 2015
1. In coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries of Uganda, field samples of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) serotypes South African Territories (SAT), A and O will be obtained. Samples will be sequenced and the information obtained will be recorded for phylogenetic purposes. FMDV of SAT types will be sent to collaborators at South Africa's Agricultural Research Council-Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (ARC-OVI) and types A and O to the ARS, PIADC for characterization and matching studies. This information, along with field surveillance data, will be provided to ARS, PIADC, Ugandan Veterinary Research Institute (UVRI) and other collaborators with epidemiological expertise for phylogenetic analysis. 2. ARC-OVI will provide training to Ugandan collaborators on serological cross-reactivity and molecular studies. The biological properties of selected field and laboratory altered FMDV variants will be determined. 3. In conjunction with collaborators from UVRI, OVI and ARS, PIADC, a FMD monitoring system, inclusive of epidemiological and surveillance data, will be established.
