1a.Objectives (from AD-416):
ARS is interested in developing a reliable pheromone lure for monitoring and managing brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB). Our project plan has two objectives that directly relate to this agreement: .
1)elucidate factors associated with enhanced biodiversity and insect behavior to reduce pest damage and.
2)develop technologies that increase biodiversity and modify insect behavior in novel production systems. The Cooperator is intersted in producing pheromone lures. The Cooperator has the expertise and infrastructure to effectively produce and market pheromone lures for BMSB.
1b.Approach (from AD-416):
ARS will acquire the basic knowledge of the identification of the BMSB pheromone. This information will be used by both ARS to develop pheromone lures for this species. The Cooperator will provide commercially available lures containing methyl (2E, 4E, 6Z)-decatrieonate (a known attractant for the BMSB) for comparison with pheromone lures.
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) has emerged as pest of unprecedented importance to specialty crops in the United States. Currently, BMSB is well established throughout the mid-Atlantic and has been officially detected in 40 states. BMSB is a polyphagous pest of numerous specialty crops but without a reliable and effective monitoring tool to detect presence, abundance, and seasonal activity. Therefore, worked directly with Sterling International to compare the attractant, methy (2E, 4E, 6Z)-decatrieonate (MDT), with the newly identified BMSB aggregation pheromone. MDT lures provided by Sterling were compared with BMSB aggregation pheromone lures in a season-long trial. Lures were deployed in the collection device of black pyramid traps deployed at the periphery of specialty crops. Included in the trapping array were unbaited controls. Trials were conducted in 10 states across the country.
