Definitively Identifying Ingestion Behaviors of Lygus Bugs on Susceptible and Resistant Cotton Plants
Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics
Project Number: 2034-22000-010-17
Start Date: Oct 01, 2012
End Date: Sep 30, 2015
To identify all AC-DC EPG waveforms for pre-reproductive adults and third-instar nymphs of Lygus spp. feeding on susceptible cotton squares. To define the biological meanings of waveforms by correlating them with damage done in squares (via histology) and stylet activities, especially ingestion and salivation (in artificial diets).
To quantitatively compare feeding of L. lineolaris third-instar nymphs on squares of Bt vs. non-Bt cotton.
Electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitoring of insect feeding will be used to identify and define all feeding behaviors of adult lygus bugs, including ingestion, salivation, and laceration, and in which cell types these behaviors occur.
