Research Project: DEVELOPING DATABASES OF FOOD PATTERNS EQUIVALENTS FOR FOODS IN NATIONAL DIETARY SURVEYS

Location: Food Surveys

Project Number: 1235-53000-016-16
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 10, 2012
End Date: Sep 10, 2017

Objective:
The purpose of this agreement is to study and assess how American’s diets meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The study will investigate and define foods in the USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) by the components in the USDA Food Patterns. The resulting Food Patterns Equivalents Database will provide the analytical basis to evaluate diets based on recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In addition, research support to evaluate the clinical/biochemical aspects of foods/food patterns and their associated bioactive constituents that relate to chronic disease prevention will be addressed.

Approach:
Identification of the amounts of more than 30 components in the USDA Food Patterns will be determined and applied to more than 7,000 foods reported in national dietary food consumption surveys in order to support application of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This work will provide the technical and scientific support for development of the USDA Food Patterns Equivalents Databases. The Cooperator will provide expertise in knowledge needed about foods, their ingredients and components, and skills in database development.
