Research Project: Inproving Resistance to Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (Clcuv) and Supporting Cotton Best Management Practices for Small Farmers

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit

Project Number: 6066-21310-004-18
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 14, 2012
End Date: Sep 30, 2015

Objective:
ARS and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA, Syria) will cooperate to provide support and oversight for cotton research conducted within Pakistan. ICARDA will also facilitate improved programs to minimize the spread of Cotton Leaf Curl Virus and coordinate workshops and training opportunities for Pakistani researchers.

Approach:
ICARDA, Syria, will provide the support and oversight for projects conducted within Pakistan by Pakistani researchers, including, but not limited to screening for Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (CLCuV), delivering new sources of resistance (germplasm), in usable backgrounds, along with improved technology for transferring the resistance genes into adapted varieties, and establishing sentinel plots to monitor CLCuV spread in Pakistan. ICARDA will facilitate programs initiated to address the need for improved crop management practices for small farmers, and coordinate workshops and training opportunities for Pakistani researchers.
