Research Project: Characterization of Resistance in Cantaloupe and Honeydew to Cucurbit Yellow Stunting Disorder Virus and Sweetpotato Whitefly

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 5305-21220-005-20
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Jun 30, 2016

Objective:
1) Compare and characterize host plant resistance to sweetpotato whitefly biotype B (SPWF-B) that was identified in four melon accessions in 2012 and the two previous sources of low-level resistance; 3) Determine inheritances of the observed resistances to SPWF; and 4) Initiate the breeding process to introgress SPWF resistance to elite western U.S. shipping type melons.

Approach:
Evaluate melon germplasm for host plant resistance to SPWF-B in replicated field tests. Cross resistance sources with elite germplasm for introgression of resistance to western shipping type melon cultivars. Determine inheritance of resistance.
