Research Project: Collection of Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J.E.SMITH) Populations in South Florida.

Location: Insect Behavior and Biocontrol Research Unit

Project Number: 6615-22000-025-18
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Aug 01, 2010
End Date: Sep 30, 2014

Objective:
Rear a collection of fall armyworm larvae and/or eggmasses for possible parasitoid parasitoid emergence.

Approach:
1) Fall armyworm populations will be collected from three south Florida counties, Hendry, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach. Collection times will be during the fall (Oct.) and spring (Feb.) seasons, depending on location; 2) Collections will be made in corn plots grown in either in grower fields or at University of Florida Research & Education Centers in Homestead (Tropical REC) and Belle Glade (Everglades REC); 3) Larvae collected from whorl-stage corn will be brought back to the laboratory and allowed to finish development on greenhouse-grown corn tissue. Adults will be placed in mating cages and eggmasses will be sent to the University of West Georgia, Carrollton, for analysis. Parasitoids that emerge from eggs or larvae will be processed in the Meagher laboratory.
