Ongoing ARS research at the Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center has shown that treatment of Ich with copper sulfate and peracetic acid is effective in lab studies. Copper sulfate is routinely used in the aquaculture industry for parasite control, but it can be toxic if not used correctly. Peracetic acid may have potential for these studies under circumstances that are common at this facility. This research will be conducted at the cooperator’s facility because of the availability of fish, and because the water source is a factor in disease outbreaks. Two treatments for disease control (copper sulfate and peracetic acid) will be tested at several concentrations to determine their toxicity and effectiveness.
