Research Project: Identification of the Origin of the Invasive Cogongrass and Preliminary Exploration for Potential Biological Control Agents

Location: Tick and Biting Fly Research

Project Number: 3094-32000-037-36
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jun 01, 2013
End Date: May 31, 2015

Objective:
1) Conduct preliminary exploration in the origin of cogongrass for potential biological control agents. 2) Curate and identifiy insect herbivores and determine if there are potential biological control agents.

Approach:
Once the origin of invasive cogongrass has been determined by Texas Agrilife molecular geneticists, preliminary foreign exploration will be conducted to determine if there is potential for biological control of this invasive grass. Two visits per year (wet & dry season) over the two year period will be conducted to survey for host specific insects feeding on and damaging cogongrass. Local collaborators will be identified in the country of origin and a specific cooperative agreement will be established to allow for continued field work between visits by ARS scientists. Insects collected in the surveys will be curated and identified. Recommendations will be made as to which insects may be suitable as biological control agents.
