Research Project: Rangeland Production and Condition Following Spring Wildfire

Location: Livestock and Range Research Laboratory (LARRL)

Project Number: 3030-21630-003-16
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jul 12, 2013
End Date: Mar 31, 2018

Objective:
As a result of the recent Pautre Fire on the Dakota Prairie Grasslands (DPG) many questions have arisen regarding the production and condition of the rangeland from a wildfire event. The purpose is to perform, document and publish data that will provide land management agencies including the Forest Service and permitees with information such that they can make the best management decisions on our public lands as well as educate the public. Specifically, this project will assess the effects of the Pautre Fire by sampling the soils and vegetation of the major ecological sites within the project area.

Approach:
Specific methods are being determined during an on-site meeting May 8, 2013 and will be described after that date. However, it is known that species composition, productivity and rangeland health assessments will be evaluated on burned and non-burned sites across multiple ecological sites.
