Characterization of a Novel Translational Model for Becker Muscular Dystrophy
Project Number: 5438-31000-089-02
Start Date: Aug 01, 2013
End Date: Jul 31, 2014
The proposed research will identify DNA markers associated with susceptibility to stress that frequently results in death in pigs identified in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center research population. We will accomplish this by sequencing the dystrophin gene that has a defect that causes this condition. We will also characterize this condition to provide an animal model for therapeutic research for human muscular dystrophy.
This project will use bioanalytical approaches in combination with phenotyped swine populations to identify DNA markers associated with an adverse reaction to transport or handling stress. The resulting markers from this analysis can be used to identify and monitor stress in commercial swine populations.
