The objective of this study is to determine the presence or absence of contaminants that could contribute to the production of Acid Beverage Floc (ABF) among commercial and experimental sugarcane varieties of varying genetic backgrounds. This research is part of a larger program to understand the factors that lead to the combining of an amino acid and a polysaccharide to form ABF in some but not all refined sugars. ABF is a significant contaminant to the beverage industry and a major impediment to the use of varied sources of cane sugar.
Conduct compositional analyses of juice samples from commercial and experimental varieties being evaluated at the USDA, Sugarcane Research Unit (SRU) in Houma, LA.
