Research Project: A Novel Attract-and-Kill Approach for Managing the New Invasive Pest Spotted Wing Drosophila in Multiple Small Fruit Crops

Location: Appalachian Fruit Research Laboratory: Innovative Fruit Production, Improvement and Protection

Project Number: 1931-21000-024-33
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 01, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2015

Objective:
The objectives for this project will be to: 1) identify fruit-based attractants for spotted wing drosophila; 2) identify visual cues important in host location; 3) combine chemical (fruit-based) and visual cues to develop attract-and-kill approaches; and 4) distribute information to stakeholders.

Approach:
We will identify attractive olfactory and visual stimuli that can be integrated into an attract-and-kill device for spotted wing drosophila. Behavioral bioassays will be conducted in the laboratory and under semi-field conditions, followed by full-scale field evaluations. Research findings will be communicated regularly to the affected stakeholders.
