The team will determine which genes in combination with mutant alleles of the soybean SACPD-C gene will create a stable oil profile with greater than 20% stearic acid and less than 3% linolenic acid. The PI will develop new sources of the high stearic acid trait through a mutagenesis approach. Cooperators will discover the genetic basis for the high stearic acid trait in current soybean germplasm. The team will coordinate the development of molecular marker resources, share soybean germplasm, and determine the stability and any associated yield drag of the trait across different environments. The cooperators will independently incorporate low linolenic acid alleles into soybean lines with the high stearic acid trait.
