A bioinformatic and genetic approach will be used to analyze the genome, transcriptome, and proteome of various fruit species using conserved motifs to identify candidate postharvest disease resistance genes. Functional analysis of the identified genes will be conducted in tomato or another model system. The obtained data and the results of the analysis will be shared by both parties. Molecular approaches along with biochemical methods will be utilized to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the various components of a biocontrol system interact and to identify the components that define the effectiveness of biocontrol performance. Methods and findings will be shared by both parties. The focus of the USDA-ARS will be on apple, while the major focus of the School of Biotechnology and Food Engineering will be on kiwi fruit and tomato. Newly identified antagonists will be shared by both laboratories to explore the operation of postharvest biocontrol systems.
