To improve control of avian influenza virus (AIV) by better understanding vaccine failure, immunity and transmission in avian species. This work is comprised of several components which will collectively contribute to the above objective. Sub-objectives of this work involve evaluating emerging AIV variant virus transmission and spread in poultry; quality control and technical support for AIV diagnostics among the NIH centers for excellence in influenza research and surveillance; characterization of new isolates from international locations; and investigation of the immune response of ducks to avian influenza virus.
This project involves numerous objectives which will be achieved with a team approach. First quality assurance and control (QA/QC) testing for diagnostic testing will be routinely conducted among numerous labs which conduct animal influenza surveillance. Novel virus isolates which are collected by the cooperator will be evaluated for pathogenesis and biological properties with the goal of determining the threat of these new isolates to poultry and/or the potential for poultry to serve as reservoirs. More advanced elements of the avian host and pathogen interaction will also be explored by characterizing the immune response of ducks which are critical wild and domestic host species for avian influenza virus.
