Objective:
The narrow genetic base in U.S. soybean breeding is a major limitation to yield progress and profitability. We are addressing this ‘genetic bottleneck’ issue by introducing exotic Asian domesticated stock into applied U.S. breeding programs. We are also introducing Asian Wild soybean to U.S. breeding by producing upright and adapted breeding lines from 20 wild soybean types representing a min-core of the USDA wild soybean collection. We have developed and are refining a novel method for breeding with wild soybean. We also are evaluating the mini-core collection of wild soybean to promote effective use of the new breeding lines we are developing from the mini-core. As new breeding lines are developed, we are determining the genetic basis for desirable yield responses using SNP marker analysis to facilitate industry adoption.

Approach:
1. Transfer large proportions of the wild soybean genome from each of 20 diverse wild soybean accessions to agronomically adapted soybean breeding lines by selecting within Mega-populations using field breeding combined with DNA marker technology 2. Evaluate the core and minicore collection of the wild soybean accessions for morphological/biochemical plant and seed traits. 3. Verify the proportion of wild soybean (G. soja) in agronomically superior breeding lines from the cross of domesticated x wild soybean, and develop efficient breeding approaches to introgress wild soybean alleles into elite breeding populations. 4. Map yield QTLs with yield enhancing alleles from wild soybean. 5. Develop and release improved germplasm from G. max x G. soja crosses for use in modern breeding. 6.Develop NILs for wild/domesticated soybean traits and determine the yield drag associated with each of these domestication traits. 7. 7.Identify yield QTL from Japanese Plant introductions Nakasennari and Fukuyataka and compare to YLD1 and YLD2 haplotypes from PI 416937 8. Coordinate the USB Southern Diversity trials in groups IV through VIII 9. Develop and release new germplasm derived from exotic Asian soybean. 10. Identify yield alleles and genes derived from Asian soybean which are associated with improved yield.
