1. Use virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) to turn off candidate genes in the iron stress response. If silencing results in improvment or worsening of IDC symptoms use RNA-seq to characterize the response; 2. Test VIGS constructs developed under objective 1 for involvement in other nutrient stress responses (Nitrogen, Phosphate, Calcium, Sodium) using hydroponics; 3. Once genes improving nutrient stress responses are confirmed, we will use sequence differences between genotypes to develop molecular markers that could be broadly used across soybean cultivars.
