Project Number: 8080-21000-023-13
Start Date: Jul 01, 2014
End Date: Jun 30, 2015
Hybridizations between early flowering lines carrying the PPV resistance transgene and ‘Improved French’, and advanced selections from the UC-Davis breeding program will continue through the third backcross generation on a large number of plants propagated onto rootstocks from the flowering F2 generation. These plants will be used in crosses to ‘Improved French’ and several elite UC-Davis breeding program selections. This will provide a large number of seedlings carrying the ‘HoneySweet’ PPV resistance gene and with traits that will be adapted to the California growing conditions and industry requirements. These seedlings (F3) will be planted in the Kearneysville greenhouses, tested for the presence of the early flowering gene, and only those plants not carrying the early flowering gene will be shipped to the UC-Davis program for evaluation by the breeding program and the dried plum industry.
