Research Project: Water and Agro-Ecosystem Dynamics in Watersheds Under Changing Climate and Land Use

Location: Great Plains Agroclimate and Natural Resources Research

Project Number: 3070-13000-012-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2014
End Date: Jun 30, 2019

Objective:
To improve model simulation of water resources under the stressors while decreasing uncertainty in model results. To demonstrate application of the modeling framework to better understand agro-ecosystem dynamics and quantify agro-ecosystem vulnerability and resilience.

Approach:
Assessing complex system dynamics is a cross-disciplinary task in which convergence of large datasets, new technology, and expertise are necessary to increase our understanding of these systems. This problem requires the development of new approaches to: 1) manage and share large datasets while assessing their spatio-temporal dimensions, 2) provide capabilities for analysis of variance, spatio-temporal visualization, and pattern recognition within cross-disciplinary areas, and 3) integrate and improve models to better represent long-term phenomena. Specific activities will include: development and implementation of hard-coded routines in open source models for model coupling/integration, development and implementation of model project translators (builders) and interfacing routines, and development and implementation of scenario-manager applications.
