Research Project: Evaluate and Improve Western Corn Rootworm Artificial Diet

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21220-007-14
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 01, 2014
End Date: Jun 30, 2016

Objective:
1) Develop an improved, standardized artificial diet for western corn rootworm larvae that can be used in diet-toxicity assays with all toxins targeted for transgenic rootworm control. 2) Develop an efficient artificial diet system capable of rearing western corn rootworm larvae all of the way to beetle emergence.

Approach:
A series of diet aspects will be evaluated for improvement including formulation, texture, presentation, feeding stimulants, pH, nutrients, and microbial control. When optimized for western corn rootworm growth and development, toxin overlays will be evaluated and optimized with one standard diet. Eventually, we hope to produce a complete rearing system for western corn rootworm larvae including ways to evaluate toxins, but this may extend into future agreements.
