Research Project: Genetic Characterization of Cercospora Arachidicola and Cercosporidium Personatum

Location: Peanut Research

Project Number: 6604-21000-004-09
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 02, 2014
End Date: May 30, 2015

Objective:
Obtain complete genome sequencing of Cercospora arachidicola and Cercosporidium personatum as the first step to better understand the diseases: early and late leaf spot in peanut.

Approach:
Isolate significant quantities of genomic DNA from both species, a particularly difficult task given the slow growth of both organisms. Generate genomic libraries, perform high-throughput sequencing and assembling using Newbler assembly and CLC-Bio benchwork to obtain at least a first draft of each of the two genomes. Then, search for genes of interest that can help in the control/management of the disease, and generate tools to understand the genetic diversity of both pathogens.
