Objective:
To assess non-target effects of Areawide aquatic weed control operations on mosquitos and other organisms impacted by weed control activities.

Approach:
Funds will be used to support research by the UCD PI in the Department of Entomology and Nematology and in particular, by one Ph.D. candidate in this department working under the PI’s supervision. The key question is how aquatic weeds and their management affect mosquito populations. The FY2017 continued funding will allow completion of the research and the writing of manuscripts. Travel funding is also requested to present this research. In 2017-2018, we will write and submit two manuscripts. The first will present our mesocosm experiment which tested effects of Eichhornia crassipes and glyphosate treatments on mosquitoes and beneficial aquatic invertebrates. The other manuscript will present results from a second mesocosm experiment in which we researched how mosquitoes and beneficial invertebrates responded to Egeria densa and to treatment of E. densa with fluridone.
