Objective:
The objective is to use high throughput genotyping systems to identify DNA markers associated with genes controlling pre-harvest sprouting resistance and Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance in durum wheat; 2) evaluate markers for breeding applications; and 3) evaluate genomic selection strategies for improving traits in durum wheat breeding.

Approach:
Develop large mapping populations to fine map the regions on chromosome 2B containing major QTL affecting seed dormancy and pre-harvest sprouting in durum wheat. DNA markers will be developed based on sequence colinearity with barley, rice, and Brachypodium, as well as the available wheat genomic sequences. Identify closely linked and diagnostic markers to incorporate pre-harvest sprouting in the durum wheat breeding program using a marker-assisted breeding process. Use genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) technologies to genotype a set of durum wheat breeding germplasm. Identify markers associated with the Fusarium head blight (FHB) QTL using association mapping analysis. Evaluate the effectiveness of applying genomic selection (GS) strategies for improving complex traits in durum wheat breeding programs.
