Research Project: Assessment of Natural Refuge for Lygus lineolaris

Location: Southern Insect Management Research

Project Number: 6066-22000-088-001-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2014
End Date: Jul 30, 2019

Objective:
To assess the proportion of tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois)) populations originating from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in Mississippi.

Approach:
Tarnished plant bugs will be monitored in a commercial cotton field located adjacent to an area containing other known host plants in two locations in the Mississippi Delta. Weekly, upon the appearance of tarnished plant bug in cotton (July – October), two pheromone traps for the European tarnished plant bug will be placed at the edge of the cotton field. Additionally, 200 sweeps (8 sets of 25 sweeps) will be taken within the cotton field. Adult tarnished plant bugs from both pheromone traps and sweeps will be mail on dry ice to Monsanto.
