Research Project: Phosphorus Acid MRL Barrier To EU Export Of California Tree Nuts

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-040-013-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 1, 2014
End Date: Nov 30, 2019

Objective:
Conduct research to trace the signature of phosphorus acid throughout tree nut production and marketing channels.

Approach:
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, Dried Fruit and Nut Association of California, California industry, and foreign counterparts to address retention of tree nut exports to EU. Elements of this TASC activity will be conducted in phases: 1) the development of methods for phosphorous acid analysis (i.e., How do we detect the residues? – as related to having confidence in any MRL), objective 2) the characterization of phosphorous acid residues from tree nuts (How do the residues levels vary? – as related to an appropriate “ceiling” for an MRL), and objective 3) identifying dynamics of phosphorous acid residue formation and elimination in tree nuts and orchards (i.e., How long do the residues last? – as related to agrochemical-specific contributions to the MRL).
