Research Project: Breeding and Marker-Assisted Selection for Pierce’s Disease Resistant Table and Raisin Grapes in California

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics

Project Number: 2034-22000-010-31
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jul 01, 2013
End Date: Jun 30, 2015

Objective:
1. Develop PD resistant table and raisin grape germplasm/cultivars with fruit quality equivalent to present day standards. 2. Develop molecular markers and linkage map for Xf/PD resistance in the BD5-117 family (SEUS) which represents a source of resistance different from V. arizonica F8909-08.

Approach:
1. Make crosses combining homologs of resistance from b43-17 to develop the highest level of resistance possible. 2. Make crosses to pyramid powdery mildew resistance with PD resistance. 3. Develop Resistant Gene Analog (RGA) markers to facilitate marker assisted selection (MAS) for PD resistance. 4. Evaluate resistant selections in field production trials for commercial fruit quality.
