Objective:
1) Test USDA-ARS jet testing technology to characterize erosion resistance of Austrian bank soils. 2) Enhance the USDA-ARS database comprising erodibility properties of streambank soils with data from Austrian rivers. 3) Test the resistance-to-erosion formulation used by USDA-ARS channel erosion models to quantify the rate of erosion of Austrian streambank materials.

Approach:
Improved understanding of fluvial streambank erosion mechanics will be developed from ongoing studies along the Danube River downstream of Vienna, Austria. Data will be collected using USDA-ARS jet-test technology to characterize the resistance to erosion properties of the bank soils. These data will be used to evaluate the relationship between fluvial bank erosion rate and those factors controlling bank erosion used by USDA-ARS channel erosion models such as CONCEPTS and BSTEM.
