Research Project: Immune Assay to Evaluate Cross-Protection Following Influenza Virus Vaccination Project Number: 5030-32000-109-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 01, 2013
End Date: Apr 30, 2015

Objective:
Using samples from live-animals, evaluate cross-reactive antibody and T cell response elicited following vaccination with different swine influenza virus vaccines to identify a surrogate of protection, both at local and systemic levs.

Approach:
Samples (blood for sera and peripheral blood mononuclear cells; nasal wash) will be collected from vaccinated and non-vaccinated pigs and used in assays to evaluate cross-reactive antibody and cell-mediated immunity. Quantitative and qualitative assays will be used. Pigs will be challenged with a heterologous influenza virus to correlate cross-protection (decrease in lung lesions and viral burdens) with an immune parameter.
